David W. Hilsabeck passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. W. Rudd, Saturday morning, January 21 at 4 o'clock, after an illness of several years, aged 85 years, 12 days. The deceased was born in Stokes County, North Carolina on January 9, 1890. In 1828, he moved to Indiana with his parents and in that state was united in marriage to Miss Martha E. Holder in 1842. To this union nine children were born, six whom are living: J. C. Hilsabeck and Mrs. James Rudd of the city; S.E. Hilsabeck and Mrs. William Kirk of Minonk, J.C. Hilsabeck and Mrs. James Rudd of this city, J.R. Hilsabeck of Doniphan, Nebraska and Martha Holder of Denver, Colorado. He was converted and united with the Methodist Church and in 1857 was licensed as a local preacher of the church. In 1851 the family moved to Woodford County, Illinois. When the war broke out he was an enthusiastic union man and on August 13, 1862, he enlisted in company C, 77 Illinois volunteer infantry and served until March 27, 1863, when sickness made it necessary for him to be mustered out. In 1865 he moved to Minonk, where he purchased a farm, on which he lived until 1881 when he moved to Fairbury, where he has since resided. In February, 1900, his wife died and since that time he has been an invalid, making his home with his children. He was a good citizen, a good Christian and a kind and indulgent husband and father and has gone to receive the reward of a well spent life. Post 75 assisted in the funeral services. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church on Monday, January 23, at 11 a.m., his old pastor, Rev. E.S. Wilson officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. J.A. Johnson. The remains were taken to Minonk, where they were laid to rest beside his wife. -The Fairbury Blade, January 27, 1905.
