Thomas Nuttall
Birth: Jan. 5, 1786
Death: Sep. 10, 1859

Botanist, Zoologist. He was a pioneer naturalist in America from 1808 until 1841. During that period he crossed the North American continent to the Pacific Ocean with several scientific expeditions and also visited the Hawaiian Islands. He drew and collected new species of plants that were unknown to science at the time. Nuttall was the first to use a natural system of classification in the United States and discovered and proposed a new genus of plants, Collinisia, which had several species in the Western United States. His published works include "Manual of Ornithology of the United States and Canada" (1832 and 1834), which became a sourcebook for many of the plants on the North American continent, "The Genera of North American Plants, and a Catalogue of the Species to the year" 1817 (2 vols., 1818); "Journal of Travels into the Arkansas Territory during the year 1819" (1821); "The North American Sylva: Trees not described by F. A. Michaux" (3 vols., (1842-1849). (bio by: Owlisnapp)
