Joe Jennings Anderson, 101, died Sunday, October 26, 1997, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin. He was born August 11, 1896 at Morgantown, Indiana to Alonzo and Hattie (Staples) Anderson. Joe married Hazel Rogers on July 13, 1923 at Garden City, Kansas. She preceded him in death on June 5, 1987.
Joe attended the United Methodist Church in Lakin and the Church of God in Ulysses. He attended school in Indiana. He moved with his family to the Menno community in Kearny County when he was 10 years old. He served in the Medical Corps of the Army in World War I. After his father died, Joe took over the family farm at a young age. He was a lifelong farmer and stockman in the Menno community. His special interests were family and work. In his younger years, he played on several community baseball teams and remained an avid baseball fan.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter Neva Jo Anderson and six brothers and sisters. Survivors include: Four daughters and sons-in-laws: Lois and Mel Bailey, Topeka, Kan.; Doris and Ted Harder, Salina, Kan.; Twila and Lloyd Stone, Emporia, Kan.; June and John Hovorka, Oklahoma City, Okla. Caretakers: Delbert and Marie Miller, Ulysses, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Lakin, with Pastor William Salmon officiating. Burial followed at the Lakin Cemetery. Memorial may be given to the High Plains Retirement Village or Donor's Choice in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
