A member of Company C, 2nd Oregon Volunteer Infantry who died of disease during the Spanish American War.

Pvt. Hawthorne's remains were originally buried in the American military cemetery in Paco near Luzon and were returned to the U.S. in 1920. He was buried with full military honors.

Before young Hawthorne left for the Philippines he hosited a flag at the family residence. That flag was used to drap his casket and was buried with him.

Wistar Hawthorne was the son of University of Oregon professor Benjamin J. Hawthorne and his wife Emma.
