Funeral services for Herbert Leon "Tilly" Carver, 92, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 9, 2002 at Rose-Neath's Southside Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Larry Earl, pastor of First Church of God assisted by Rev. Billy Franks, pastor of Oakmont Church of God. Interment will follow in Centuries Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, November 8, 2002 at the funeral home.
Mr. Carver, a longtime resident of Shreveport, was born August 30, 1910 in Simpson, LA and passed away Tuesday, November 5, 2002 in Shreveport, LA. He was a retired U.S. Letter Carrier, member of First Church of God, where he was active in teaching the Golden Age Sunday school class going on various mission projects and a member of the Shreveport West Camp of Gideons International. Mr. Carver was instrumental in the early development of the Church of God camp ground near Pollock, in Grant Parish and in 1997, he was given special recognition for that work at the annual State Camp Meeting. He moved from Leesville to Shreveport in 1923 and in 1967 helped organize the first class reunion of the Class of 1927 of C.E. Byrd High School. Mr. Carver served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during World War II and also served in the Louisiana National Guard. He was also active in the distribution of magazines at the VA Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. J. G. and Rev. Lillie Carver; two brothers, Cecil and Everett; sister, Maud; first wife, Doris Marie LaBorde and second wife, Martha Gwin Gates.
Mr. Carver is survived by his wife, Bonnie Ross Carver; son, Belford E. Carver of Hammond, LA; daughter, E. Faye Tucker of Anchorage, AK; step daughters, Yvonnie Dirks of Greenwood, LA and Connie Strange of Houston, TX; four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family requests that memorials be made to the First Church of God, 6808 Jefferson Paige Road, Shreveport, LA 71119 the Gideons International or to the Guest House on Normandie Drive.
