| Birth: | Feb. 11, 1921 | | Death: | Mar. 23, 2000 |  Cardinal Antony Padiyara, Major Archbishop Emeritus of the Syro - Malabarese See of Ernakulam - Angamaly, India, Cardinal Priest of the Title of Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Monte Verde was born on February 11, 1921, in Manimala, within the Archdiocese of Changanacherry, India.
He received his Education at St. Peter's Regional Seminary in Bangalore and joined the Latin Rite, becoming incardinated in the Diocese of Coimbatore.
Ordained a Presbyter on December 19, 1945, he performed Pastoral Work in the Diocese of Coimbatore, serving as Rector of the Minor Diocesan Seminary and successively, Faculty Member of St. Peter's Regional Seminary in Bangalore.
At the early age of 34, he was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Ootacamund on July 3, 1955, receiving his Episcopal Consecration on October 16, in Ootacamund, from Msgr. René Feuga, Bishop of the Diocese of Mysore, assisted by Msgr. Francis Xavier Muthappa, Bishop of the Diocese of Coimbatore, and by Msgr. Matthew Kavukatt, Archbishop of Changanacherry of the Syro - Malabars. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Changanacherry of the Syro - Malabars on June 14, 1970, returning to his native Syro - Malabar Rite, he was transferred to the Metropolitan See of Ernakulam of the Syro - Malabars on April 23, 1985.
Vice - President of the Episcopal Conference of India and of the Syro-Malabars, he served as Apostolic Visitor for the Syro-Malabars Faithful residing in Kerala and President of the Syro - Malabar Episcopal Conference.
Pope John Paul II created him Cardinal Priest in the Consistory of June 28, 1988, with the Title of Santa Maria Regina Pacis a Monte Verde, June 28, 1988. Promoted to Major Archbishop of Ernakulam - Angamaly of the Syro - Malabars on December 16, 1992, when the See was elevated to that rank, he resigned the Pastoral Government of the Major Archdiocese on November 11, 1996. In 1998, he was awarded the Padmashree.
The Cardinal died March 23, 2000, at the Yoga and Nature Cure Centre he had founded near Kochin, aged 79, and lies buried inside St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica in Ernakulam, Kerala.
