He played at the quarterback and tailback positions for five seasons (1941, 1946 to 1949) in the National Football League with the Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants. He was a member of the 1947 NFL Championship Cardinals team, where he was backup to Paul Christman. After playing collegiate football at Southern Methodist University, he was selected by the Cardinals in the 10th round of the 1941 NFL Draft and appeared in 48 career regular season games, passing for 2,504 yards with 20 touchdowns.
