Columbus Evening Republican 8 Jan 1951 MRS. BARKES TAKEN BY DEATH Illness Fatal to Wife of Local Undertaker-Rites Wednesday.
Mrs. Vallie Barkes, 61, 1525 Chestnut street, died at 4 o'clock this morning at the Bartholomew county hospital. She was the wife of George Barkes of Barkes and Fox funeral home.
She had been ill for several years, seriously ill since Thursday and in the county hospital since Friday afternoon.
She was born in Jackson county Aug. 28, 1889, to George and Mary Sluder Eades. She was married to Mr. Barkes on Aug. 28, 1912.
She was a member of the Christian church, of the G. L. Reeves Bible class and Ladies Aid society of the church. She had lived in Columbus nearly 50 years.
Surviving with Mr. Barkes are a daughter, Mrs. Bill Sorgius of Columbus; a step-mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Eades of Columbus; a brother, Roy Eades of Columbus; three sisters, Mrs. Cecil de Mercado and Mrs. Harry Tirtle of Columbus and Mrs. Clarence Barkes of St. Petersburg, Fla., and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Barkes and Fox funeral home. Dr. T. K. Smith will be in charge of the rites, assisted by the Rev. James E. Myers. Burial will be at Garland Brook cemetery. The casket will be open at the funeral home after 7 o'clock tonight.
