Roland Andrew Erickson, age 90, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2008, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.
Roland was born October 27, 1917, in Wall Lake, to Albert and Anna (Wunschel) Erickson. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church by Rev. Albert Discher. He renewed his Baptismal vows at Peace Lutheran in 1932 in the rite of confirmation by Rev. Ad Schwidder following one year of catechism study.
He attended a rural country school for elementary education and graduated from the Wall Lake High School in 1936. Due to a physical condition he failed to meet military requirements during the time of WWII, prompting his being placed in class 2A.
On September 7, 1947, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Nuetzman at Peace Lutheran Church by Rev. Alfred Christiansen. To this union four children were born.
Roland was born, raised, and resided on the family farm until retirement. He was active in 4H and served as a leader, was a member of the Wall Lake School Board for two terms, serving as President for two years, and was a lifetime member of Peace Lutheran Church holding several offices in the Voter's Assembly. He taught Sunday school and high school Bible Class for 41 years. Roland was involved in the church's music department with choir and as organist.
Roland is survived by his wife, Shirley; children Dr. Allan Erickson and wife Susan of Papillion, NE; Keith Erickson and wife Maribeth of Wall Lake; Marilyn Smith and husband Steve of Urbandale, IA; and Janet Wakefield and husband Art of Gretna, NE; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Orville and sister Eleanor Bahr.
He was employed with the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home for approximately 12 years.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, February 11th, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, Iowa, with Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 p.m., Monday at the funeral home in Wall Lake.
