Tomasita Cantu Rangel, who was lovingly known as "Wella," passed away on June 14, 2008 surrounded by her family at a local hospital in Alice, Texas after a long illness. She was 94 years old. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Tomasita was born on November 5, 1913 in La Rosita Community in Duval County, Texas, in the area where her family had settled in the mid-1800's. She attended rural schools in La Rosita Community and graduated from San Diego High School in 1933. A passionate believer in education, she taught school in La Rosita area. She was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice, where she was an active member of the Rosary Society. She loved reading, gardening and spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Cenobio and Elvira Cantu; her husband, Mauro Balli Rangel, her son, Santiago ("Jimmy") C. Rangel and her daughter, Carolina Rangel Rivera. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Victor Cantu, Santiago Cantu, Tomas Cantu and her sister, Anita Cantu San Miguel.
She is survived by three sons: Mauro (Eva) Rangel, Jr. of Alice, Jorge (Guadalupe) C. Rangel of Corpus Christi, Rogelio (Cynthia) Rangel of Alice and two daughters: Sylvia R. Trevino of Alice and Rosalinda (Carlos) R. Martinez of Corpus Christi and son-in-law, Augustin Rivera, Sr. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Elvira Rangel Garcia of Corpus Christi, numerous nieces and nephews and 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Tomasita will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was an inspiration to her family. Her legacy will live on forever in the many lives she touched.
Visitation and a rosary service were held on Tuesday, June 17 at Mauro P. Garcia Funeral Home, Alice, TX. A funeral mass was celebrated on Wednesday, June 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial followed at New Collins Cemetery, Alice, TX.
Pallbearers - Grandsons; Augustin Rivera, Jr., Alfredo Trevino, Jr., Norman Charles Rangel, Rogelio Rangel, Jr., Andrew Joseph Martinez, and Jaime Santiago Rangel.
