Governor of Texas. A railroad official from 1857 to 1861, he served as representative of the 26th District in the Texas Senate. He was a leading member of of the Secession Convention which met in Autin in 1861 and a signer of the ordinance of secession. Stockdale served as lieutenant governor of Texas from November 5, 1863, until June 1865. When Governor Pendleton Murrah fled to Mexico in June 1865, Stockdale served as governor until Andrew J. Hamilton took over in August 1865, as appointed by President Andrew Johnson. Stockdale remined active in politics and the railroad business for the remainder of his life. The town of Stockdale, Texas, was named in his honor. (bio by: Andrew Likins)
