LAWTON, Iowa -- Phyllis Jean Edwards, 82, of Lawton died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Phyllis was born Sept. 3, 1921, to Ed and Bernice Wright. She attended country school and graduated from Cushing (Iowa) High School in 1938.

She was united in marriage to Lawrence Edwards Jr. on Jan. 1, 1940. They lived on a farm near Correctionville, Iowa, until 1945, then on a farm in rural Moville, Iowa. They moved to their current farm near Lawton in 1975. She was an active partner in the purebred hog business for more than 50 years.

She was a member of United Methodist Church in Moville and United Methodist Women for many years. She was currently a member of Community Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Women. She was a longtime member of the Friday Afternoon Club in Lawton and various bowling leagues.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Lawrence; four children and their spouses, Sandra and Scott Newberry of Tucson, Ariz., Jim and Jayne Edwards of Sioux City, Barbara and Gil Kettelhut of Omaha, and Janis and Steve Marlette of Valrico, Fla.; six grandchildren, Tom and Becky Edwards of Yutan, Neb., Dave and Jennifer Edwards of Sioux Falls, S.D., Scott Newberry Jr. of Omaha, Heather Newberry of Chandler, Ariz., Toni and Alex Velong of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Zachary Mahloch of Omaha; four great-grandchildren, Jill, Kelsey and Cole Edwards and Hailey Velong; a sister, Edna Durham of Correctionville; two sisters-in-law, Maxine Wright of Correctionville, and Marlys Scott of Ardmore, Okla.; and two brothers-in-law, Leslie and Oral Edwards of Correctionville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Christopher Marlette; a sister, Esther Hettwer; and three brothers, Virgil, Arlos and James Wright.

Pallbearers will be Lester Zahnley, Don Williams, Denny Edwards, Larry Edwards, Francis Larsen, Steve Munz and Ron Walters.
