He married Mary Wood on April 29, 1783 in Townsend, MA.
He served in the Revolutionary War under Capt Samuel Douglas; Col. James Prescott regt which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; Capt Henry Farwell; Col. William Prescott 10th regt; list of men raised to serve in the Continental Army form Capt. Will thurlo's co., 8th worcester Co. regt dated Fitchburg, December 20, 1777; engaged for town of Fitchburg; joined Capt. Fox's co., Col. Henley's regt; Continental Army pay account for service from June 1, 1777 to June 1, 1780; Copt Hugh Maxwell;s 1st co., Col. Bailey's regt, company returned dated Camp near Valley Forge.
As a Patriot, he has descendants who have become members of the Sons of the American Revolution as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution.
He was survived by his wife Mary, children Abel Jr., Benjamin, Polly, Betsy, Hannah, Larned Sampson, Lucy, Nancy, Asenath, Emily, Almira, and Tyler Gilman.
He is buried in Packer Cemetery in Mt. Holly, VT.
