Raised on a farm in a large family, he re-enrolled in high school at age 22 and two years later went on to St. Thomas College. George Halas, owner/coach of the Chicago Bears, asked Steinbach's college football coach if he knew of any good tackles. Coach Joe Boland recommended the 6-foot, 220-pound Steinbach. He played a full season with the Bears in 1930. In 1931 he played four games with them before being traded to the Chicago Cardinals to finish out the season. He played with the Cardinals in 1932 and started one game in 1933 before being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished his NFL career with the Eagles, having played in a total of 29 regular season games in four years. He then returned to North Dakota to farm and operate heavy equipment.
