A former college All-American, he was head couch for the Oakland Raiders, 1966 to 1968, Buffalo Bills, 1969 to 1970 and was an assistant coach with Philadelphia and Atlanta. In three season as the Raiders coach, he had a 33-8-1 record and took the team to there first Super Bowl in 1967 and was named AFC coach of the year. In college, he was a four-year starting quarterback from 1945 to 1948 and was the first player in college football history to start four consecutive bowl games. He set the NCAA record with 4,044 career yards passing while leading the University of Georgia to a 36-8-1 record and two Southeastern Conference Championships. In 1949, he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the 1st round of the NFL Draft. He played in the National Football League, 1949 to 1951, with the New York Bulldogs, Yanks and Philadelphia Eagles. In 2004, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. He died of heart failure. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
