Hazel was my grandma. She was the most wonderful woman you could meet. Strong willed, but with a heart of gold. She loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren so much.
She was born on her parent's farm in the middle of a snow storm. Her mother sent her father to get the doctor, but they didn't get back in time. Her aunt ended up delivering her. She was born on her father's birthday. When he got back, he looked at her and said "I have a beautiful red-headed girl for my birthday."
One day, when Hazel was little, the neighbors came over to talk with her parents. During the conversation they asked if they could adopt Hazel, since she had such beautiful red hair. They said "You have so many children, you wouldn't miss just one." Of course her parents said no. :)
The first Christmas with my step-daughter, who was not yet 2, Hazel was in a wheelchair. My step-daughter climbed right up in her lap like she had known her forever (it had only been about 4 months she had been around her). My dad had fallen asleep in the couch across from where they were sitting....my step-daughter pointed at him and said "night nigh." needless to say the uproar of laughter in the room woke him up!
I was at work the day she passed. I was standing looking out the window and saw a nursing home ambulance go by. I just got this feeling that something was wrong with my grandma. When I went on lunch about 15 min later I called my mom and asked if everything was alright with Grandma. She paused and asked why. I told her about the ambulance and she responded by reminding me that Grandma had been at the hospital the past few days. Then she rushed me off the phone. I just couldn't shake that feeling though. A few hours later my mom called me at work and told me that Grandma had passed. She didn't want to tell me when I called because she knew that I was driving. She also told me that she had just gotten off the phone with Grandma's nurse right before I called, she had died 15 min before I called. I thank my grandma all the time for letting me know she was gone, even though I wasn't with her physically.
There's not much more I can say. I love my grandma to death and I always think of her multiple times a day. My son sleeps with the teddy bear she gave me when I was young and talks about her all the time, even though he was just 2 when she died. He remembers her.

Hazel Justice, 90, of Elburn, formerly of Woodstock, IL, passed away Monday morning, January 26, 2004, at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, after several months of declining health.
She was born March 24, 1913, one of ten children born to Daniel and Blanche (Tidmarsh) Sheehan in Lake Villa, IL. The family made their home in the Antioch-Lake Villa area where Hazel grew up and attended local schools.
On June 14, 1933, Hazel was united in marriage to Milo John Justice in Antioch, IL. John was employed in highway construction for many years, which took them all over the state of Illinois. In the early 1940's, they moved to Woodstock, where they made their home until 1989, when John passed away. The following year, Hazel sold the family farm and moved to Elburn to make her home near her son, John. Hazel continued to live independently until the fall of 2000, when she moved to Rosewood Care Center, St. Charles, IL.
She was active in the United Methodist Church in Woodstock for many years and volunteered for many school activities when the children were young. She gave many hours of service to the V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary in Lake Villa and worked with the Grange Association whenever there was a dinner to serve. In later years, she was active in the Women's Guild at the Community Congregational Church, Elburn.
Hazel loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and simply enjoyed the company of others. She was a first-rate storyteller and fond of recalling the life and times of her family and community. She was strong-willed and independent in her living, yet gracious and genereous in giving of herself to family and friends. her coffee pot was always on and both hands and heart were eager to serve anyone who came to the door.
She is survived by one son, John C. (Carolyn) Justice of Elburn, IL; six grandchildren: Adeel (Philip) Nelson of Clearwater, FL, Julie Justice of North Aurora, IL, Nancy Marshall, also of North Aurora, Michael Justice of Yorkville, IL, Kathleen Justice of Columbia, MO, Jill (Larry) Sanders and Susan (Julian) Rojas, all of Yorkville; five great-grandchildren: Felicia, P.J. and Kendall Nelson; Rebecca and Alex Rojas, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The last of her generation, Hazel joins now her parents; her husband, John; one daughter, Joan Khaja; nine siblings; Howard, Elmer, Warren "Doc", "Bud", Joe, Bob, Arline, and Stella, and one brother in infancy, who preceded her in death.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:30am, Friday, January 30, 2004, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. The Rev. Dr. Barry Kolb, pastor of Lord of Life Church, LaFox, IL, will officiate and interment will follow at McHenry County Memorial Park, Woodstock, IL at 2pm. A memorial in her name has been established in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
