Roman Catholic Cardinal. Parisian born Paul-Pierre Philippe joined the Order of Preachers in his native city in 1926 and upon finishing his studies across various Dominican houses of studies was ordained priest in July 1932. Appointed to the teaching staff of the Dominican studium of Lviv, Poland, and later of the Pontifical Angelicum Athenaeum in Rome, he served as an officer in the French army during the Second World War. Named faculty member of the "Le Saulchoir" Institute, he was successively assigned as superior of Dominican house of studies and faculty member of the named Angelicum Athenaeum. Founder of the Institute of Spirituality for Seminary Directors and Masters of Novices, founder and director of the Dominican School for Mistresses of Novices and apostolic visitor to various religious institutes, he was named as the first socius of the commissary of the Holy Office, later becoming commissary himself. Appointed secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Religious on December 14, 1959, he was consecrated archbishop of the titular see of Erocleopoli Maggiore on September 21, 1962 by Pope John XXIII at the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica in Rome. Named secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith on June 29, 1967, Pope Paul VI created him cardinal deacon in the consistory of March 5, 1973 with the deaconry of San Pio V a Villa Carpegna, appointed him prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Oriental Churches on the following day. Cardinal patronus of Sovereign Military Order of Malta, he resigned the prefecture on June 27, 1980. Opting for the order of cardinal priests, his deaconry was elevated 'pro illa vice' to title on February 2, 1983. The Cardinal died of a heart attack in a Roman nursing home and lies buried inside the chapel of his Order at the local Campo Verano Cemetery.
