On September 16, 2001 Fred Sermon began his journey to heaven after a two-month long battle with cancer. The family will receive visitors Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Centuries Funeral Home. Services will be held at the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, September 19 at 2ᚨ p.m. Officiating will be Rev. Sam Carr, pastor of Word of Life Church. Interment to follow in Centuries Memorial Park with full military honors.

Mr. Sermon fought his illness with admirable grace and courage, and faced death as merely the next great adventure of life. Fred was born September 10, 1932 in Shreveport to the late Claude Sermon and Ruth Spencer Sermon. He loved his country and served aboard the CVA-31, USS Bon Homme Richard and DD-468 USS Taylor during the Korean War. He proudly served the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. He retired at Barksdale in 1971. After his military retirement, he began a second career as an instructor of electricity at Louisiana Technical College in Shreveport. He retired after 20 years in 1998.

He leaves behind his cherished wife, Aline Breithaupt Sermon; five children, Pam Sermon Hendrix of Plain Dealing, Cathy Sermon Maddry and her husband, Grady of Cotton Valley, Debbie Sermon Lynch and her husband, Joby of Texarkana, Rob Sermon and his wife Loretta of Benton, Mike Sermon and his wife Alanna of Jonesboro, AR; two step-daughters, Nancy Emery and her husband, Bill, and Susan Ferrell and her husband, Frank, both of Shreveport. Papaw Sermon also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Don Brittan, Dick Cameron, Phil Coleman, Bill Emery, Frank Ferrell and Duane Kimball.

Fred Sermon was a man who loved family and friends alike. The family would like to thank Don and Jan Brittan for their constant prayers and support, his church family from Word of Life for their prayers, Rev. and Mrs. Kenneth DeHart for their prayers and frequent visits, and especially the staff at Dubuis for the special care they ministered to him and us.
