James was a son of John Sartin Jr. and Margaret Barnes. James married Mary Jane Smith (a sister to Leander Sartin's wife) and they had two children: Leander Pink Sartin and Susan Ida Jane Sartin. James died in the Civil War.

38th Regiment, Co. K, Mississippi Cavalry - CSA

Died following the Siege of Corinth from typhoid/measles.
