Birth: Dec. 2, 1895
Death: Sep. 7, 1972

Roy Oliver Bacon was born in Japan, Missouri. He was the oldest of 11 children. Roy helped on the farm but one of his proudest achievements was graduating from the 8th grade. He worked for a neighbor Mr. Voss while attending school and earned enough to buy himself a suit for graduation. As a young man Roy played his fiddle at barn dances. A cousin remarked that he was a left handed fiddler and quite good. Roy enlisted in WWI but was discharged for flat feet, this was a great disappointment to him. When he returned he married his sweetheart Myrtle Bailey on January 19, 1919 in Union, Franklin Co., Missouri. While Roy began their married life as a farmer he wanted to learn a new trade. He studied with James "Jim" M. Dotter to learn the granitecutting business. Roy & Myrtle moved the family to Graniteville, Missouri in the 1930's so Roy could pursue that career. After the Great Depression ended, the family moved to St. Louis where Roy worked for various monument shops. Many of the tombstones and tombs throughout the St. Louis metropolitian area were inscribed by him. Upon his retirement he and Myrtle designed a new home in Sullivan, Missouri. Roy enjoyed baseball, carrying his transitor radio with him throughout the Spring & Summer. He stated that he played ball with Jim Bottomley as youngster. Roy was a member of the I.O.O.F.Roy & Myrtle had 3 children and 8 grandchildren. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
