A 14-year-old boy looked on as his father shot his mother outside the family's home and then turned the gun on himself, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said.
Josh Brooks called 911 to say that his dad, Darryl Brooks, 44, had shot Peggy Brooks in the front yard, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Dennis Lemma said.
The teen fled to the back of the house as he talked on the phone to a dispatcher.
More Crime News Investigators found the couple's bodies about 15 feet apart, a gun next to Darryl Brooks. They had no reported history of domestic violence, and nothing in the house suggested a confrontation, Lemma said.
"Completely unexpected," he said. "Terrible tragedy."
Peggy Jackson, the wife of Darryl Brooks' partner in a lawn business, said Brooks and her husband worked together from 7 a.m. Thursday until early afternoon and that "Darryl acted like Darryl."
"Darryl's a sweetheart," Jackson said. "He's never been a violent person. We don't know exactly why it happened or what happened or what set him off."
Deputies received the 911 call from the house on Barr Street, north of Oviedo, about 4 p.m., but no one said anything. When a dispatcher called back, Lemma said, the 14-year-old said his father was shooting Peggy Brooks, 45.
It was not clear how much of the violence the teen saw, but he apparently witnessed at least one gunshot. Investigators, child-protection workers and victim advocates spoke with the boy late Thursday.
Neighbor Doug O'Brien described the couple as "great neighbors" and said Darryl Brooks came home after work Thursday and was playing the drums.
"Darryl and Peggy never argued," O'Brien said. "It's totally, totally out of character."
Jackson said the Brookses, who had been married for nearly 22 years, seemed happy.
The two couples have known each other for years, socialized at barbecues, and their children played together when they were younger. She said Darryl Brooks had a "bubbly personality."
"We always called him the yakker," Jackson said. "He loved to talk, loved to meet people. The friendliest guy you'd ever know."
Neighbor Marion Priest said he often saw Darryl Brooks riding a golf cart around the rural neighborhood, where homes are on lots of about 5 acres.
"He was always real friendly to me, real mellow," said Priest, a surveyor. "Nobody would have thought it."
Those of us who knew Peggy and Daryl cannot understand how this could've happened. They always seemed so happy, and so at peace. The answers we want the most will always be buried in the past. We will miss them both tremendously.
Rest in Heavenly peace.
