James Arthur Johnstone was an adventurer, leaving his native Canada in 1862 for California at age 24. He worked in southern California for two years, then went to Virginia City, Nevada, working as a blacksmith and carpenter during the silver rush. After falling ill, he returned to recover with his parents in Canada. He married Elzina Sophronia Way in 1866; they settled in Manitoba province. They raised six children, Anna Minnette, Herbert Way, William Arthur, Donald Weldon, Earnest Marshall Albert and Percy Havelock. In 1891 he and his family emigrated to southern California, where he and his son William founded a citrus industry. James soon turned his attention to land development in the Los Angeles basin. After the death of his wife in 1904 he married Maude Blanche Smith. Their adopted son James Ralph Johnstone is buried next to James Arthur Johnstone.
