Msgr. Angelo Giuseppe Jelmini, Former Apostolic Administrator of Lugano, Switzerland and Bishop of the Titular See of Thermae Basilicae, was born in Muralto, on November 3, 1893. Ordained a Presbyter at the age of 23, on June 28, 1917, for the Diocese of Basel e Lugano, he was immediately appointed Parish Priest of Bodio and Director of the Boy's Oratory of Lugano.
Aged 42, on December 16, 1935, Jelmini was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Lugano, receiving his Episcopal Consecration with the Titular See of Thermae Basilicae on February 2, 1936, from Archbishop Filippo Bernardini, inside the Cathedral of Lugano, where he also took his Possession of the See on the following day. A Hero of the Second World War, making possible the escape of several Jews and Allied Prisoners of War searched by the Nazis, establishing a direct line between Rome and Lugano, on October 30, 1945, he received a Doctorate Honoris Causa in Theology from the University of Freiberg and on December 4, Pope Pius XII, named him Assistant to the Pontifical Throne. His Humanitarian Activities continued also following the end of the war, mostly within immigrants seeking a new life in Switzerland.
Named Dean of the Episcopal Conference of Switzerland in 1952, on June 15, 1960, Msgr. Jelmini was appointed Member of the Pontifical Central Commission for the Preparations of the Ecumenical Council of Vatican II. During his over thirty years of Episcopacy, he gave particular attention to the Diocesan Seminary, Religious Orders and Congregations, the Catholic Action, the typography La Buona Stampa and the Movimento Sindacale Cristiano Sociale. He furthermore founded the Caritas Diocesana and participated as Padre Conciliare in the named Second Vatican Council.
Bishop Jelmini died of cancer, on June 24, 1968, aged 74, and lies interred beside his Predecessors inside the Crypt of the Sanctuary Basilica of the Sacro Cuore in Lugano, clad in Liturgical Vestments.
