Actor, Director. A leading man of films, stage and television since the 1940s, he is best known for such pictures as "Lost Boundaries" (1949), "Scaramouche" (1952), "War and Peace" (1956) and "The Sun Also Rises" (1957). He was born Melchior Gaston Ferrer in Elberon, New Jersey. After briefly attending Princeton University, he acted in summer stock and worked as a newspaper editor in Vermont. Ferrer later found success in radio as a producer and writer. He made his acting debut on Broadway in the 1940 production "Kind Lady" and made his big screen directing debut with the 1945 film "The Girl of the Limberlost". Among his other film credits are, "Lili" (1953), "Oh! Rosalinda!!" (1955), "The Vintage" (1957), "The World, the Flesh and the Devil" (1959), "The Longest Day" (1962), "The Fall of the Roman Empire" (1964), "Sex and the Single Girl", (1964) and "El Greco" (1966). His other directing credits include "The Secret Fury" (1950) and "Green Mansions" (1959). He had memorable television credits with, "Columbo", "Hawaii Five-O", "Dallas" and had a recurring role in the series "Falcon Crest". Ferrer was married to actress Audrey Hepburn from 1954 to 1968 and produced the 1967 thriller "Wait Until Dark", which she starred in. (bio by: C.S.)
