DAVENPORT GAZETTE obit headline: Sudden Death of an Old Settler
"Mr. Gabriel McArthur, a well known old resident of this county, died last Sunday at his residence, on his farm a few miles from Davenport, after a brief illness. On Saturday he was in town transacting business and feeling in excellent health. After his return home that evening, having eaten a hearty supper, he was taken with bilious colic and died in twenty-six hours from the time of the attack, suffering during that time intense pain. Mr. McArthur came to this county in 1839, and for the last twenty years has lived on the Allen's Grove road, about four miles from Davenport. He was known by his many friends as an upright, industrious and sturdy farmer, whose loss will be lamented by all. Mr. McArthur is the father of nine children, seven of whom are now living and mourn his loss. The funeral took place at the Christian Church yesterday."
