On 3 April 1968, he was participating in a 45-man combat patrol sweeping the area for signs of enemy activity in Quang Nam province. At 1555 hours, the patrol stopped for a brief rest break, where members noticed Vietnamese boys along the side of the road begging for handouts.
Lance Corporal James C. Thomas last seen as he walked to a nearby stream outside of his unit's perimeter security position. His loss unnoticed until next break, 30 minutes later. Upon returning to the scene, the patrol found his helmet, pack and canteen, but no sign of LCPL Thomas or his weapon. They found no indication of a struggle.
LCPL James Thomas simply disappeared without a trace.
