| Birth: | Jul. 26, 1873 Barnwell County South Carolina, USA | | Death: | Aug. 31, 1913 Lena Hampton County South Carolina, USA |  Police Chief John Brooke Harter, Sr. of Allendale, died a tragic death on Sunday, August 31, 1913 at the loading dock at the train depot in Lena, SC. Chief Harter was shot to death in the line of duty, leaving a young wife and several small children. The "Hampton County Guardian Paper" featured an in-dept article on the incident September 03, 1913
According to the report, a witness stated that the suspect walked up to Chief Harter and asked him where was his gun. When Chief Harter replied that he did not know what he was talking about, the suspect produced a revolver and shot him five times. The suspect, who was arrested minutes later and confined in the Hampton County Jail, refused to make a statement.
"On Judgment Day when at the Pearly Gates you'll hear the Voice saying: "Welcome, policeman, You've time on earth is through, you've borne your burdens well and just kept the Peace. Take my hand. Come walk a beat on my Golden streets, You've done your time in Hell...."
