| Birth: | Dec. 2, 1931 | | Death: | Apr. 12, 1971 |  Jazz Musician. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was known as superb accompanist and distinctive piano soloist. In the 1950s, he recorded 14 titles for Blue Note working with Dinah Washington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Lester Young. From 1959 to 1963, he was a member of the Miles Davis Quintet and also performed with John Coltrane's group. Through the remainder of the 1960s, he recorded as piano leader for Blue Note, Riverside Records, Vee-Jay, Verve and Milestone Studios. He died of a heart attack in Toronto, Canada.
