OOLAH B. EVANS (nee CONWELL) Brentwood, California Formerly of Hobart, Indiana January 8, 1914 - May 26, 2008 Former Hobart Clerk Treasurer Oolah B. Evans, a long time Hobart, Indiana resident, Oolah passed away peacefully on Monday, May 26, 2008, in Brentwood, California. She was was born on January 8, 1914, near Barracksville in West Virginia, the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Ida Angeline (nee Curry) Conwell. Mrs. Evans spent her youth in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati prior to her marriage to David Moore Evans in 1935. David and Oolah moved to Hobart in 1937 to work with his uncle, Henry S. Evans. They remained in Hobart until 1978. rs. Evans served as Hobart's Clerk Treasurer from 1956 - 1976. She was the recipient of numerous awards including the Good Government Award - Hobart Chamber of Commerce, the Outstanding Citizen Award-Hobart Junior Chamber of Commerce; the Outstanding Leadership Award-Hobart Business & Professional Women Association; the Leadership Award-International Institute of Municipal Clerk Treasurers; and the Indiana Easter Seals Service Award. She was a member of the Hobart Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star for 50 years and a lifetime member of six United Methodist Churches in California, Indiana, Ohio, and Oregon. Following her retirement from government office, she resumed her art interest and graduated from the Washington School of Art in Chicago. She was well known for her oil paintings of seascapes, still life, and birds. Her paintings were in the Invitational Exhibition of Art in Paris, France, in 1984. Following their retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Evans resided in Sunnyvale, California, Pinellas Park, Florida, Murietta Hot Springs, California and Salem, Oregon, prior to Mr. Evans' death in 1991. Mrs. Evans moved to Brentwood, California in the late 1990's to be close to her daughter, Patricia Rae Evans. Mrs. Evans was preceded in death by her parents; her six brothers; and four sisters; and her beloved husband. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia; her sisters-in law, Marilyn Evans of Ohio and Marigold Conwell of Ohio; her nieces, Ruth Miller Cox of Texas, Betty Whyte of West Virginia, Geraldine Scott of West Virginia, Wilma Artimez of West Virginia and Mary Jane Flege of Ohio; her nephews, Arnold and Donald Conwell of Ohio, Carl Wilson of West Virginia and Victor Clark of Nevada; 20 grandnieces and grandnephews; and dozens of great grandnieces and great grandnephews, cousins, and friends. During the last few months of her life, Oolah became known to family, friends and health care professionals as the "Delicate Warrior" because of her indomitable spirit. In truth Oolah was a "Delicate Warrior" her entire life. She is a testament to gentleness and kindness, courage and integrity, love and compassion, and positivism and joy. She made the world a better place for all who knew her. A memorial service at the Brentwood Community United Methodist Church, 809 Second St., Brentwood, California will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. An Eastern Star Memorial Service and burial of her ashes in the Hobart Cemetery will be held on October 10, 2008. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the David M. and Oolah B.
