Son of Richard Mason and Joan (Allchin) Mason of Dorking, Co.Surrey, England. He was christened there on Mar 23,1605/6. (See "The American Genealogist", Vol 78 (2003), pg 61).

He married Hester Wells Jan 13,1632/3 at Malden, Co.Essex, England.

Children: Hannah Mason Brooks, Ruth Mason, Mary Mason Easterbrook, John Mason, Joseph Mason, Daniel Mason, and Sarah Mason Gardner.

Watertown deaths: Captaine Hugh Mason Dyed the 10th of October 1678

Capt. Hugh Mason, the founder of his name in Watertown, was among the earliest settlers. He was for many years Representative and Selectman. His wife Esther, the mother of his seven children, he brought with him from England. She d. May 1, 1692. (Harris' Epitaphs)

Captain Hugh Mason and Esther settled on School Street; came over in 1634; he was freeman in 1635; and is mentioned seventy-three times in the first book of records, twenty-nine years Selectman and ten years Representative. He died in 1678, leaving seven children, the daughters having married into the Concord families of Brooks and Estabrook and the Brookline family of Gardner. The sons carried on the family name and reputation in Newton, Lincoln, and in other states. (Great Little Watertown)

Hugh Mason an his wife Hester, or Esther, embarked for New England at Ipswich, England, April 30, 1634, in the Frances, John Cutting, Master. He settled at Watertown, and, March 4, 1634-5, was admitted freeman of Massachusetts. He was selectman of W. for many years, and deputy to the general court ten years. By his wife Esther, who died May 21, 1692, aged 82, he had eight children. (NEHGS Register, July, 1880)
