Monsignor Don Tonino Bello was an Italian Saintly Bishop who is nowadays a Candidate for Beatification.
Born at Alessano, Lecce on March 18, 1935, Antonio Bello remained for everyone, even after his Episcopal Nomination simply Don Tonino. The son of Marshall of the Carabinieri and his humble wife, he grew up in poverty in a small village, where the residents lived on Agricultural Economy. He lost his father and brothers at an early age and underwent his Elementary Studies in his village and later at the Seminaries of Ugento and Molfetta. He frequented the ONARMO, Opera Nazionale Assistenza Religiosa e Morale degli Operai.
Ordained a Presbyter on December 8, 1957, he was named Prefect of the Minor Seminarians the following year, a position he kept for eighteen years. He furthermore served as Director of the Vita Nostra for his Diocese.
In the late 1970's, he was appointed Parish Priest of Tricase, an Office he kept until his nomination as Bishop of the Diocese of Molfetta, Ruvo, Giovinazzo and Terlizzi in 1982, receiving his Episcopal Consecration on October 30, from Archbishop Michele Mincuzzi, assisted by Bishops Aldo Garzia and Mario Miglietta. In 1985, he was named President of the Pax Christi. Perhaps his most distinguished case during his Episcopacy was the Peaceful March on Sarajevo on December 7, 1992. He died serenely at the early age of 58, consumed with cancer on April 20, 1993.
