Prominent Merchant is Laid Away

Funeral services for Henry J. Ebinger, 80, pioneer Marietta business man and president of the Turner-Ebinger Company, who died at his home 503 Fifth Street, Saturday afternoon of pneumonia, were held at the home Monday afternoon and were largely attended. Rev. Christian Emigholtz, pastor of St. Paul's Evangelical Church, of which the deceased was a life long member, officiated. He was assisted by Rev. David E. Adams, pastor of the First Congregational Church.

Pallberers were Walter K. Best, Eugene W. Lancaster, Harry C. Barnes, A.L. Hawkins and Frederick W. Ebinger of the Turner-Ebinger Company; Ralph Toler, Harry D. Athey and Will F. Meister. Interment was made in Oak Grove.

Henry Jacob Ebinger was the second son of the late Jacob and Catherine Abendschoen Ebinger, who were among the pioneers of the substantial old German families who came to Marietta nearly a century ago. He was born in Marietta on December 16, 1850. He began his career in the mercantile business in Marietta at an early age, having entered the employ of the late S. R. Turner, founder of the Turner-Ebinger Company department store when he was 14 years old. He continued with the pioneer dry goods house in this section of Ohio during his lifetime. He became a member of the firm of S. R. Turner & Company in 1881, this firm having continued until the year 1897, when at the suggestion of S.R. Turner and also at the suggestion of his son, Fred S. Turner, the Ebinger name was added to the firm name that has since been the Turner-Ebinger Company. Following the retirement of Fred S. Turner as president of the company, he having succeeded his father, Henry J. Ebinger was chosen president in which capacity he served for many years until his death.

Mr. Ebinger was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, having been one of the original members of the old Marietta Board of Trade that antedated the Chamber of Commerce. Progressive in his business methods and known for his integrity in business dealings and ideals, he was recognized for upholding the prestige of his store to one of ideal business principles. Of pleasing personality, genial and courteous in his contacts, Mr. Ebinger had many friends in Marietta and surrounding territory.

Married in 1874

Mr. Ebinger was united in marriage in 1874, with Miss Anna Meister, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gotlieb Meister, another of the old pioneer German families in Marietta. Mrs. Ebinger died in 1901. Surviving are a son and a daughter, Harry J. Ebinger and Mrs. Clara Ebinger Scott, wife of James W. Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Scott and their daughter, Miss Jane Scott, having made their home with Mr. Ebinger. William H. Ebinger who was associated with the deceased in the Turner-Ebinger Company firm since 1893 is the only surviving brother and Mrs. Carrie Ebinger Theis of Columbus, Mrs. Emma Menzel, wife of Rev. Paul Menzel of Washington. D.C., and Mrs. Kate Ebinger Kelly of Augusta, Georgia are the sisters of the deceased. Fred H. Ebinger, elder brother of Mr. Ebinger, died about four years ago and a younger brother, David A. Ebinger of Columbus, died while in Florida only three weeks ago. A brother-in-law, Charles G. Kelly, died at his home in Augusta, Georgia on Friday evening, Mrs. Kate Ebinger Heidrick Kelly having suffered a double bereavement in the death of her husband and her brother within 24 hours.

Among those from out-of-town who arrived Monday to attend the obsequies were David A. Ebinger, Miss Clara Louise Ebinger, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Erdmann and Marlow Perrin, nephews and nieces of Mr. Ebinger, who live in Columbus.
