Thomas Ewing Bailey was born in Columbus, Ohio, March 15, 1861; the son of Daniel Baker & Wealthy Ann (Rose) Bailey. Died at Grand Valley, Colo. July 11, 1940. He married Martha Alice Jessup on Sept. 23, 1883, She was born at Vincennes, Indiana on August 23, 1863. Died April 1939 at Grand Valley, Colo.

They had a family of eight children : Maud Alice, Emma Pearl, Daniel Bivian, Olive Agnes, George Dewey, Thomas Earl, Iva Irene & LaVern.

Tom and Alice Bailey were married Sept. 22, 1883, in 1884 they moved from Phillipsburg, Kansas by covered wagon to Colo. Where they took up a homestead on Piceance Creek. Moved back to Phillipsburg, Kansas in 1889 for about two years. Then moved back to Colo. About 1892, stopped in Cripple Creek (gold mined for a while, and after a disasterous fire that burned many blocks and up to the house next door, they moved to Aspen, Colo., then to New Castle, Colo. And in 1898 to Parachute, Colo. They bought a ranch on Parachute Creek and a short time later they bought a store in Parachute. Tom then built a new building and moved into it in 1902. He sold the store in 1908. In 1906 the town of Parachute was changed to Grand Valley. The Tom Baileys lived there until 1913 then moved to the ranch on Parachute Creek. Tom Bailey was one of the first to realize the potential of oil shale. He and Mr. Rowley and a Mr. Belinger had a small resort for a while on the west fork of Parachute Creek.
