SWEET HOME - Vernon O. Jones, 71, of Sweet Home, died Friday while staying with his daughter in Gearhart.

He was born in Ft. Collins, Colo., the son of Myron and erna (Green)Jones. He grew up in Idaho, where he graduated from high school in1942. He attended Whitman College for two years.

Mr. Jones was a fire controlman in the Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS Columbia, the most decorated cruiser of the war, and took part in seven major battles.

He lived in Emmett, Idaho, and Kennewick, Wash., before moving to Sweet Home in 1980.

He married Harriet Knox Nov. 10, 1946, in Emmett, Idaho. She died May 20, 1988.

Mr. Jones worked as a machinist in the Bremerton, Wash., shipyards and for the Army Corps of Engineers. He was the pastor of the Biblical Church of God in Wilsonville for 10 years.

He had done research on the Bible and written many articles and booklets. He liked raising roses, hunting and woodworking, and he was known for his generosity.

Surviving are daughters Georgina Yokoyama of Gearhart, Jan Hood of Georgia and Jill Corey of Sweet Home; son Vern O. of Juneau, Alaska; brothers Gerald of Yuma Ariz., William of The Dalles and Ronald of Tygh Valley, and sister Gretchen Sexton of Boise, Idaho. Grandchildren Brandon and Brian Moe and Keanu Yokoyama and great-grandson Brandon M. Moe also survive.
