Dr. William G. Curtis, of Southport.

Southport, Aug. 9.---In the death of Dr. William Gilman Curtis, which occurred here to-day, Southport loses one of its most prominent and beloved citizens. Dr. Curtis had been a great sufferer for many years and during his last Illness he was confined to his bed for a period of over six weeks. At the time of his death he was surrounded by all of his family.


Dr. Curtis was born In Hopkinton, N. H., May 10. 1826, and was, therefore.

In his 84th year. He was graduated from Dartmouth College with the degree of B. A., after which he entered the medical department of Howard University, one of his Instructors at this University being Oliver Wendell Holmes. Dr. Curtis moved to North Carolina in 1847, locating at Smithville, now Southport, where he enjoyed a large practice in his profession. Dr. Curtis was closely identified with the affairs of his section and held many offices of importance under the United States government. He was always a loyal and devoted son of his adopted State. Dr. Curtis was married three times. In 1878 he was married to Miss Margaret J. Coit daughter of the late Benjamin B. Coit M. D., of Norwich, Conn. The children of this marriage are W. C. Curtis, auditor Southern National Bank, of Wilmington: Prof. Courtlandt Curtis, of the department of architecture In the Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Auburn, Ala., and Howard C. Curtis, editor and owner of The Southport Herald.

The remains will be interred In Oakdale Cemetery at Wilmington to-morrow afternoon.
