Alex Brown, son of Ora and Nelle (Coors) Brown, was born December 24, 1920, at Walker, Missouri. He passed away, Friday, September 19, 1997 at his home northeast of Nelson, Nebraska, at the age of 76 ears, 8 months and 26 days.
Alex attended Davenport country school and graduated from Davenport High School.
He served his country during World War II as a Message Center Man in the Marine Corps from April 8, 1945, to October 2, 1946, in the Pacific Area.
March 17, 1945, In Mankato, Kansas, Alex was married to Lyla McGinness in Mankato, Kan. This union was blessed with nine children.
He was active in the Angus E.U.B. Church and the Angus Church of Christ and served on the church boards. Alex served on the Ox Bow and Nelson Boards of Education and also the elevator board. He farmed northeast of Nelson for many years. Farming was his life. At the time of his death he attended the Nelson Community United Church of Christ.
Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant sister, Bess.
Survivors include his wife, Lyla; six daughters, Ruth Staley and her husband Kay and Doris Brown, all of Kearney, Jo Ann Kruse and her husband Ron of Omaha, Margaret Rasmussen and her husband Sid of Lincoln, Martha Thompson and her husband Jerry of Hoskins, and Barbara Dahlman and her husband Vern of Atchison, Kansas; three sons, Robert Brown and his wife Carma of Shelton, Arnold Brown and his wife Debra of Nelson, and Kenneth Brown and his wife Sue of of Geneva; one sister, Norma Keldsen and her husband Lee of Malcolm; 18 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Alex loved his family. They were very special to him.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 23, 1997, at 2 p.m. at the Community United Church of Christ in Nelson, Nebraska, with Rev. Royce Butchel Officiating. Music was "How Great Thou Art" and "Higher Ground" with Alana Moorhead as soloist and Wayne Moorhead as organist. Interment was in Nelson Cemetery. Klawitter Price Funeral Home of Nelson was in charge of the arrangements.
Pallbearers were Wayne McClure, Barry Melvin, Marvin Hoffman, Tom Wilson, Gene Ferebee and Martin Whitmore. Honorary pallbearers were Jason George, Evan Brown, Bryce Brown, Justin Staley, Gene Brown, Eric Rasmussen and Daniel Brown.
