Carl Berkeley "Berk" Pruitt, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2004 at Central Washington Hospital, due to complications from AML Leukemia. He was 74.
Berk was born July 24, 1930, in Okolona, Mississippi. His family moved from Okolona to Holly Springs, MS when he was 14. During his junior year in high school, he moved to Winthrop and then Tonasket, WA with his brother Jim, who was working for the U.S. Forest Service. He hitchhiked by himself back to MS, where he finished his senior year and graduated from Holly Springs High School in 1948. The summer after high school he began working for the Mississippi State Highway Department, where he was employed for 7 years.
It was in Holly Springs that he met Minnie Evelyn Gresham and they were married four months later on October 2, 1951, by his uncle, Rev. Willy Word Milligan in Tupelo, MS. In 1955, they joined his brother in Tonasket, WA, where Berk worked for the Forest Service for 8 months. On March 19, 1956, he began his career as an Engineer with the Washington State Department of Transportation in Okanogan, WA. He had the opportunity to work on many of the major state highways and bridges that are landmarks in Washington today. These include Snoqualmie and Stevens Passes, the North Cascades Highway, the highway between Tonasket and Republic and all the state highway bridges between Chelan and Tonasket. In 1976, he was transferred to the Wenatchee office of the DOT, where he retired in July of 1986, after 30 years, 4 months of service.
Berk "Papa" was a loving father and grandfather who never missed a sporting event his grandsons participated in. He was a gatherer, collecting whatever looked interesting. He filled his life with various hobbies including building and flying model airplanes, reading, rock collecting, and woodworking. He was a master craftsman, and helped friends and neighbors with various projects. His woodcarvings, furniture and scroll saw work were outstanding. He also gathered people to himself. He loved people, remembered faces, and was never embarrassed to talk to anyone. He was glad to share a joke, a smile, a chat, and lately a game of cribbage. He loved all kinds of music, had a beautiful voice, and was always singing or whistling. Berk was an Elder in the Okanogan Presbyterian Church, and a past President of the Golden Key Kiwanis Club in Wenatchee.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 52 years, Minnie Evelyn Gresham Pruitt of East Wenatchee. Other family members include daughters, Karen D. (Lyman "Bud") Schooler of East Wenatchee, and Kristi P. (Gary) Atwood of Kirkland; a sister, Linda Louise Pruitt of Tonasket; a brother, James Woodson Pruitt of Tonasket and his family; grandchildren, Steven B. Schooler, Michael R. Schooler, Nathaniel G. Schooler of East Wenatchee, Ashley L. Atwood of Ballard, Holly J. Atwood of Kirkland, Jesse A. Atwood (Kelly) of Vancouver, WA; and great- granddaughter Annabelle G. Atwood of Vancouver. Cousins include Jacqueline Seling of Jackson, MS, Elizabeth Clyde (E.B.) Reynolds of Canadian, TX, Carolyne Mitchell of Cathedral City, CA and Bronya Felding of San Francisco, CA. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, lifelong friends, friends from the D.O.T. and wonderful neighbors and friends in the community.
