Adolph Ochs
Birth: Mar. 12, 1858
Death: Apr. 8, 1935

Publisher. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was noted for becoming the publisher and owner of the New York Times. At age 11, he started as a newsboy in Knoxville, Tennessee, became a printer's apprentice, compositor and was the publisher of the Chattanooga Times in 1878. In 1896 he acquired the then failing New York Times and it one of the greatest newspapers in the world. He also went on to control the Philadelphia Times and the Philadelphia Public Ledger, which he merged together in 1913. Plus he established the "Current History" magazine in 1914. From 1900, until his death at age 77 he was a member of the executive committee and a director of the Associated Press. In 1976, the U.S. Postage Service issued commemorative stamp in his honor and he was posthumously inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 1982. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
