Alice (Olson) Ostby was born and raised in Minnesota, the daughter of Jorgen and Christina Olson. She was the 7th of 8 children; her siblings were Carl, Otto, Hattie, Glennie, Lester, Maurice and Russell. Family lore holds that Alice used to drive her siblings crazy, because she didn't like to do farmwork like they did - her sister Hattie thought she put on "city airs"! In spite of this, she was very close to all of her siblings.

Alice met her husband Bernard F Ostby in Minnesota. They had one child of their own, a son named Burt A Ostby, who passed in 2006. In addition to Burt, Alice and Bernard raised Estelle Ostby, the only daughter of Bernard's brother Earl, after Earl and Estelle's mother Lucille both passed away. Estelle considered them her parents, although she certainly never forgot about Earl and Estelle, who both died quite young (24 and 18, respectively).

Alice, Bernard, Estelle and Burt moved to Detroit in 1936, after Bernard got a job with Detroit Edison. Bernard's elderly father Bernhard moved in with them after they settled, sharing their household until his death in 1941. Alice, Bernard and their children and grandchildren visited Albert Lea many times in the ensuing years to see all the family back home, but they lived the rest of their lives in Michigan. Alice was very devoted to her son Burt, moving to the Alcona, Michigan area to be nearer to him. She and Estelle were very close too; Estelle made regular pilgrimages to visit Alice both before and after she went to live in a nursing home.

Alice was a sweet, loving woman who left behind many happy memories among her family and friends. She touched all our lives in a positive way and we're better people for having known her.
