Birth: Oct. 6, 1915
Death: Mar. 20, 2007

Ralph Newell, 91, a longtime resident of Plain, died early Tuesday morning, March 20, 2007, at the Cashmere Convalescent Center in Cashmere. Ralph Newell began his life in Alexander, ND on October 6, 1915, born to Ira and Ruby (Cross) Newell. When he was 21, he moved west, settling in the Plain area with his parents, three brothers and five sisters. He landed a job with a logging company as a faller in Plain. In 1942, Ralph married Betty Burgess, claiming he would make her the happiest woman in the world. The couple then moved to Seattle where he worked for Boeing during the war, making B-17 bombers. After 5 years at Boeing, they moved back to Plain where Ralph worked for his father-in-law, W.O. Burgess, in the logging industry again. In 1950, he and Betty started their own logging business. Ralph never actually "retired" because he loved to work, but in later years his failing eyesight kept him from driving and participating in the logging operation. Ralph and Betty enjoyed seeing other parts of the world and through the years were able to travel to Denmark several times to visit special friends. They also had the opportunity to tour parts of Northern and Southern Europe, Russia, China, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and Central America, visiting many friends and former exchange students in those travels. They especially enjoyed cruises to Alaska. Ralph was a long time member of the Leavenworth School Board and was a member of the Plain Community Church for many years, also serving on the board. He was a Rotarian in the Leavenworth club and participated as long as he was able. He appreciated the special friends he made through the years in church, Rotary and the community. Their home had an open door evidenced by their hospitality to Rotary exchange students, community, friends and family. Ralph is survived by his wife, Betty of Plain; two sons, Bill Newell of Plain, Byron Newell and his wife, Leesa of Plain; a daughter, Lisa and her husband, Keith Goehner of Dryden. His surviving siblings are sisters, Donna Lindstrom of Pasco, Ada Jordan of Olympia, and Mildred Gould of Sacramento, CA; and one brother, Bryce Newell of British Columbia. He is also survived by grandchildren, Michelle and Paul Rodgers, Nathan and Kendall Newell, Adam Newell, Jaimi and Nick Krenz, Lindsey Newell, Brendan and Tiffany Goehner, Heidi and Joshua Hill, Benjamin Goehner, Brett Newell and Leah Newell; and great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Hunter Rodgers, Eve, Fara, and Summit Newell, Dylan Goehner and Magdalene Hill. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gary Newell; daughter-in-law, Diana Newell; two brothers, Tom and Phil Newell; two sisters, Lois Crews and Margaret Piersol; and one infant granddaughter, Elyse Newell. A Memorial Service of Commemoration to Celebrate the Life of Ralph Newell will be held on Sunday March 25, 2007, at 3:00 p.m. at the Plain Community Church in Plain with Pastor Phil Strong officiating. Visitation will be at the Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth on Friday March 23, 2007, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday until 7 p.m. Memorials may be made in Ralph's name to the charity of ones choice. Private family Interment will be in the Haven of Rest Cemetery in Plain. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth is in charge of the arrangements.
