Robert was the second of 11 children, and the first son born to Daniel and Mary Hughes Rawley who came to Turkey Creek, Smith Co., TN from Rockingham Co., NC shortly after their marriage in 1819. He moved to Texas prior to 1855. He married 3 times: Martha Adaline Bowden (buried Williamson Co.,TX, they had dau. Mary Ann) Mary L. Toland (they had children Bob, Albert, and Ada) and Nancy Rebecca Heath who survived him (their children were Cutter, Jesse, Lillian, and Harry). He had 8 known children. During the War for Southern Independence he was a private in the 2nd TX Inf., Co.G. Robert was one of 7 Rawley brothers who served the Confederacy, he in TX, 4 in the Tennessee Infantry, 1 Tenn. Artillery, and 1 in the Alabama Cavalry. Only 1 did not survive the War. After the South's surrender he came back to his Houston home, eventually becoming a lawyer and county judge. In early years had also preached the Gospel. He was Methodist.

On Oct. 25, 2008 Robert's gravestone was unveiled and dedicated in a memorial service honoring him and 13 other Confederate soldiers. The solemn ceremony was provided by TX Sons of Confederate Veterans and ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. A short bio of each man was read at his grave and a volley fired in his honor. Uniformed soldiers, bagpiper and drummer escorted the entourage' from grave to grave. A reception followed.
