After high school, Harold worked for local dairies, Small and Koch and then the Hoppes Dairy.
On July 10, 1938, Harold was a passenger in a plane flown by his friend, Arthur Wehr. The plane crashed into the Lizard Creek, near Andreas, PA, killing Wehr, and throwing Harold from the plane and into the creek. Harold was taken to Coaldale Hospital with compound fractures of his right leg and multiple body abrasions.
He later moved to Philadelphia, where he was employed by Midvale Steel and the U.S. Post Office.
