Birth: Sep. 22, 1822
Butler County
Ohio, USA
Death: May 9, 1905
Dailey
Cass County
Michigan, USA

John "Nelson" Webster was the son of Amos Webster and Susannah Wright (her parents were pioneer settlers of Cass County - William R. Wright and Sarah Baldwin). He married Mary Bonnel, who died in 1867, and then Hellen Lucinda Welsh. He and Mary had the following children: Susan E. (1851); Emily "Emma" M. (1856); Lewis "Cass" (abt. 1861); Sarah Jane "Jennie" (1854); Elbridge David (1864); Addie B. (1865) and Minnie.

It appears that John Nelson Webster entrusted his female children to relatives after wife Mary Bonnell's death and before his remarriage. Susan, 18, lived with the Elbridge Jewell family in 1870 in LaGrange, MI. Also, there is a child, Mary Webster, 2, living there. (It could be that Mary Bonnell died in childbirth, and the infant girl was her daughter; the age of the child would fit with the mother's death.) Sarah Bonnell Jewell, Edlbridge's wife, was sister to Mary Bonnell, and so took in her children.

For most of his life, John Nelson was a farmer. He lived primarily in Cass County, MI; in 1850, he lived in the home of his grandmother (widow) Sarah Baldwin Wright in LaGrange, Cass Co., MI.

There was travel; in 1860, he was living in Linn, Warren Co., Iowa, next to his uncle Alvah Webster.

By 1870, he was remarried and back in Jefferson, MI. John Nelson Webster's daughter Jennie is not yet found in the 1870 census; she would have been 16. Daughter Addie went to live with the Shurte family -- Isaac Shurte and "Aunt Polly" Mary Wright.

In 1880, he was in Jefferson, Cass Co., MI, farming.

Obituary, Cassopolis Vigilant, May 11, 1905: FOUND DEAD IN HIS BED. Nelson Webster, past 80 years old, passed away at Dailey.

Nelson Webster, an aged and respected pioneer of Cass County, was found dead in his bed at his home near Dailey at an early hour Tuesday morning.

Death came quite unexpectedly. He was 80 years of age, but was still active, and on Monday had been engaged in plowing. He apparently slept his life away some time during Monday night.

The deceased leaves a wife and the following children: Cass Webster of LaGrange; Eldridge, of Penn; Mrs. Minnie Case, of Washington; Mrs. Chas [Susan] Amsden, Mrs. [Addie] Ferrell and Mrs. [Jennie] Townsend of Dowagiac.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial at the Dailey cemetery.
