Father Alois J. Sommerfeld was born in Grohs Bohso, Germany, November 23, 1890. A chaplain in World War I, he went to Rome to continue his studies, and was ordained to the priesthood in Austria, June 26, 1917. He went from there to Canada, and came to North Dakota in 1930, serving a parish in Pingree, ND, for two years before going to Sykeston, ND, where he was priest at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church until he suffered a stroke in December, 1960, and had to retire from active leadership of his congregation.

The Most Rev. Leo F. Dworshak, Bishop of Fargo (ND), conducted a Pontifical High Mass as the funeral rite for Father Sommerfeld on June 29, 1961. Music was provided by the priests' choir with burial in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, Sykeston. Honorary casketbearers were Matt Schaack, Dr. F.W. Dummer, Frank Jos. Laber, Mike Huss, Peter Schaack, and William Winandy. Active casketbearers were Nick Richter, Orvel Lundby, Louis F. Laber, John Wagner, Francis Zwinger, and Mike Laber.

Father Sommerfeld left a brother and two sisters in Germany.
