My Great Grandmother - Catherine Nicholson Campbell
Catherine "Katie" Donelda Nicholson was born May 4, 1868 in Hampden, Compton County, Quebec, Canada, to farmer Donald Nicholson and his wife, Isabella Murray, both of whom were born at the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Catherine was the fifth of ten children, all of whom were born in Compton County, Quebec.
Katie married farmer, Donald Murdo "Melavi" Campbell in the Scottish settlement of Scotstown, Compton County, Quebec. Together, they had eight healthy, strong boys, all of whom were born on and grew into adulthood on a rocky farm in Dell: Dannie Allan, John Donald, Kenneth, Murdo D., William Forbes, Merrill Angus, Alexander Murdo, and Norman Nicholson. The family also adopted a young orphan girl named Etta Gota, who was adored by the boys. The last survivor of the Campbell children was The Rev. Alexander Campbell, of Seattle, Washington, USA, who died in March 2007.
Katie, a strong Presbyterian woman who wrote and spoke both English and Gaelic, raised strong, honest, hard-working children who strived to make things better for their respective families. She died in Dell, Compton County, Quebec in 1918 at the young age of 50. She was adored by her husband and children.
