One source calculates Calvin's birth date as April 21, 1837. Other sourcs suggest he was born in 1838. It was suggested that Calvin was born in Ryegate Corner (no source provided); the organization Vermont In the Civil War states he was born in Ryegate, Vermont.

Calvin and Phebe Jane Cox married on November 9, 1858 in Peaham, Vermont [Marriage announcement, North Star (Danville, Vermont) December 4, 1858].

On January 5, 1864, Calvin Enlisted in Co. E., 7th Vermont Volunters, credited to Peacham, Vermont.
Calvin died in or near Fort Bararancas, Florida. The National Park Service states
North Star (Danville, Vermont), November 5, 1864: "Died In hospital, at B. Francas, Florida, Sept. 16,, Calvin Whitehill, aged 27".
