Born Albert Edward Locher in Zurich Switzerland, he was the son of Albert Locher and his wife Suzanne Bender Locher; Albert Jr. came to the U.S. in 1888 and he changed his last name to Bertrand and on census records claimed to be of French descent - family lore says he struck an Army Officer and fled Switzerland. (The Locher family of Switzerland were a prominent family whose roots can be traced back to 1507.)

Albert married Mary Hanrahan. They had at least six children - their two daughters named Mary died at birth- their four sons Albert Edward, Charles Edward, Edward Cuthbert, and John Aloysius grew to maturity.

Albert was a chef by profession, family lore says he was groomed to be a chef and his brother, Charles to be a hotel manager. They despised each other. Charles ran hotels in Vaud, Switzerland until his death in 1908. Albert ran the Knickerbocker Inn on Pelham Parkway in Westchester, New York and Bertrand's Throggs Neck Country Club House.

Albert's life has more questions than answers: Why did he leave Switzerland? Why did he change his family name? Why did he claim to be French when he was Swiss? Why did a Huguenot Protestant marry an Irish Catholic girl? Where did he meet his wife? They were married in New York City. Why did he name his second son after his allegedly despised brother, Charles?
