ARTHUR G. GOMES, Sr. was born in Paia, Maui, Hawaii, and attended St. Anthony's High School in Wailuku, Maui and graduated from the International Accountants College with a degree in accounting. He retired as a Captain after 34 years of active & reserve duty with the Army and the Hawaii National Guard. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor, a veteran of the Korean War, and served two years in Vietnam and three in Brussels, Belgium with the Office of the U.S. Army Attache, U.S. Embassy. He also served military time with the Dept. of Defense in Washington, DC for 13 years. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association, American Legion Florida Post No. 7, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association.

After retirement, he spent 10 years with Hechinger Hardware Co., and retired to Dunedin in 1977. He was a member of the Portuguese American Suncoast Association (PASA) and Our Ladies of Lourdes Catholic Church.

Capt., U.S. Army (Ret.) GOMES, formerly of Dunedin, FL, passed away peacefully at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, on Feb. 16, 2008, at the age of 90.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Thelma C., and his youngest son, Brian V. He is survived by his son Art G. Jr., (Ev) of Centreville, VA; daughter Darlene "Lynn" Kleen (Tony), of Kernersville, NC; brothers, Valentine Gomes, of Kihei, Maui; Melvin Rodriques, of Berlin, NH; and sister Rita Pavao, Hilo, HI; eight grandchildren: Michael, Charlene, Bryan and Kayleigh Gomes; Douglas, Justin and Bethany Wood and Catie Wood McNair; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass was conducted at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Dunedin, Florida and that was followed by an internment at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens in Florida.

The family asked that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, in memory of Arthur Gomes.
