Wm. Robertson, a former Washington county pioneer, died at the home of his son, Charles Robertson, at Ft. Morgan, Colo., on July 11, 1921, aged 86 years, months and 2 days.

Mr. Robertson was born in Brackenridge county, Kentucky, on January 9, 1835, and was married October 8, 1861, to Mary A. French. They were the parents of nine children, two dying in infancy.

Mr. Robertson came with his family to Nebraska in 1871 and settled on a farm near Kennard, where he resided for thirty years, rearing his children to manhood and womanhood. In 1900 he moved to Perkins county, Nebr., which has since been his home.

His wife passed away February 9, 1920. Some time ago he went to Ft. Morgan, Colo., to visit his son and was taken ill several weeks ago. On account of his advanced years the family realized that his recovery could hardly be expected and the children were summoned to his bedside, where they remained for some time, but at the time of his passing only the son at Ft. Morgan was with him.

Deceased had been a constant member of the Presbyterian church for more than sixty years, but two years ago he transferred is membership to the Methodist church at Kennard.

The body was brought to Kennard last week and the funeral held at the Methodist church on Wednesday, conducted by Rev. W. H. Underwood of Blair, and burial was made in the family lot at Kennard.

His surviving relatives are his seven children, Mrs. John Blaco, Mrs. Chas. Cunningham, and George Robertson of Kennard; Mrs. Alice Menking and Wm. Robertson, of Elsie, Nebr.; Chas. Robertson, Ft. Morgan, Colo., and Mrs. Jessie Tallman, of Fremont; two half sisters, Mrs. Mattie Pate of Blair, and Mrs. Lillie Vorhies of Lincoln.

Louis and Mary Jane Robertson

Louis and Mary Jane Adkisson Robertson had four children — William, Sr., Sara Ann, Lucy Catherine and Nancy Jane. Mary Jane Robertson was married to William Burgess and they had six children — Thomas A. and Averilla (both died of scarlet fever and are buried in one grave), Martha Ellen, Lillian (married to Lemuel Edgar Vorhies), John Bell, and Richard.
William Robertson, Sr. and Mary Jane French Robertson Grandparents of Francis, Evelyn, Woodrow, and Clara Elaine.

William Robertson, Sr. (William P. Robertson) was born January 9, 1839, in Breckenridge County, Kentucky. He was christened in the Presbyterian Church and later joined the Methodist Church. Mary Jane French Robertson was born November 25, 1842, or November 23, 1843. William Robertson Sr. and Mary Jane French were married October 8, 1861, in Hardinsburg, Kentucky.

William and Mary Robertson. They had seven children — Mattie J. (born 1864, married Blaco); Ethel (Effie L., born 1866, married Cunningham); George Washington (born 1868); Alice M. (born 1871, married Menking); Charles (born 1873); Jesse (born 1879, married Taliman); and William, Jr., (born 1881). Mary Jane French Robertson died February 9, 1920, in Elsie, Nebraska. William Robertson, Sr. died July 11, 1921, at Fort Morgan, Colorado. Both are buried at Kennard, Nebraska.

William Sr. served in the Civil War. One story told about him is that he had put money into a log on the log cabin and sawed off the plug. A mob of gangsters had him on a horse with a rope around his neck ready to hang him if he would not tell where his money was. Even his wife didn’t know.

William and Mary Jane came to Kennard, Nebraska, from Kentucky in 1870 or 1871. They lived on a farm near Kennard, Nebraska, Washington County, for 30 years. They moved to the Black Hills of South Dakota to cut ties for the railroad for about two years. Around 1900 they moved to Perkins County, Nebraska, 6 miles northeast of Elsie (south of the Robert Pelster place and east of the windmill). Later they moved into Elsie into the Faught house southeast of the school.

William Sr. farmed and had two mules — Sam and Julie. He could not read nor write but he could figure well in his head. Mary Jane was a little woman. They leased the school section northeast of Elsie which later went to the heirs. In time Woodrow Robertson purchased that school section lease.

Grant Phillips had the farm auction for William, Sr. and Gerald Phillips had the farm auctions for Frank and Woodrow Robertson.

One story passed down is that one of the relatives was scalped and put into the bushes.

William Jr. herded cattle when he first came to the Elsie area.

WILLIAM ROBERTSON, JR.

Father of Francis Robertson, Evelyn Kidd, Woodrow Robertson, and Clara Hallett Mattson.

William Robertson, Jr. (1881-1969), the youngest of 7 children, was born in Washington County, Nebraska, to William Robertson, Sr. and Mary Jane French Robertson.
The William Robertson, Sr. family moved to Kennard, Nebraska, from Kentucky in the early 1870’s. They farmed there for nearly 30 years before moving to the Black Hills of South Dakota for several years to cut ties for the railroad. They arrived in Perkins County around 1900 settling 6 miles northeast of Elsie. William Sr. raised cattle and wintered Longhorns that had been driven from Texas. After a few years they moved to a school section 2½ miles northeast of Elsie continuing to raise cattle and also farming. That same school section is today farmed by William E. Robertson, great grandson of William Sr.
William Robertson, Jr. arrived in Perkins County with his parents when he was about 19 years old. In his younger years he herded sheep for the Taylor Ranch in northern Perkins County and southern Keith County. This expansive ranch employed a large number of men during these years.
William Jr. married Lizzie Lucretia Radel February 14, 1906. They bought a farm 6 miles north and east of Grainton where they lived for nearly 60 years.

The first year they lived on this farm a large prairie fire came from the northwest and burned their harvested corn. The winds during the fire were as high as 50-60 miles an hour. Anticipating that the fire might destroy the house, they moved the furniture to plowed ground. However, the house was not destroyed.

They traveled by horse and buggy to Elsie and Wallace to do their trading. Their first motorized vehicle, a Model T Ford, was purchased in 1912. They got their first tractor in about 1927 and consequently had to purchase special plows to be used with this new tractor.
