Elizabeth was the daughter of Nicholas Hoffmann and Barbara Koestnerin. She grew up in Quail Run, in the Shenandoah Valley of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Her parents died around 1770, leaving her and her sister Mary as orphans. Elizabeth was "apprenticed" to Samuel Maggard and his family. So her name became Elizabeth Hoffman-Maggard. She learned how to use a spinning wheel. Around 1773, Elizabeth married Joseph Back, the son of John Henry Back (Johann Heinrich Bach), who had immigrated in 1740 on the ship Lydia. (He was related to Johann Sebastian Bach.) Joseph's two brothers, John and Henry, married two sisters, Margaret and Elizabeth Hoffmann, who were the daughters of John Hoffmann and Maria Folg. The Elizabeth Hoffmann who was the daughter of John and Maria Hoffmann and who married Henry Back, the son of John Henry Back, migrated to Rockingham County, VA with her son Aaron, after her husband Henry died. She NEVER went to Kentucky. She is NOT buried in the Maggard Cemetery in Letcher County. She was probably buried on her farm near Wolf Run in Rockingham County. Her sister Margaret also left Culpeper County after her husband, John Back, died, and she lived near her sister Elizabeth.
Joseph Back and his wife Elizabeth Hoffmann-Maggard (daughter of Nicholas Hoffmann) migrated to Kentucky in 1791. They first settled in what is now Letcher County. They also lived in Quicksand for a period of time, in Breathitt County, at the "Round Bottom." They returned to what is now Letcher County. Joseph died in 1819 and Elizabeth died in 1826. She was buried in the Maggard Cemetery because of her close connection to the Maggard family. People in the Bach-Back Genealogical Society tore her original headstone out of the ground and threw it over the hill. It is now in the possession of Mrs. Hazel Craft at the Memory Hill Museum. Then they erected a headstone with completely false information on it. What is even more sad is the fact that they knew that the information on it was false. Why did they do this? They created this false genealogy, in order to connect the Bach/Back family in Breathitt County, KY with Harman Back in Culpeper County, VA, so that they would appear credible, like the Germanna Foundation, who wrote about Harman Back. That way, they too could sell lots of books, and trips to Germany, like the Germanna Foundation. That big, dumb, orange book they sell is a joke. If you are interested in the Bach/Back family from Breathitt County, KY, please do your own research, and you will discover that what I've written here is true. Read the Bach Family Bible, read what Dr. Wilgus wrote, look at the 1810 Tax List in Rockingham County where Elizabeth is living with her son Aaron--she died there, not in Letcher County. That spinning wheel in the Breathitt County Library was the one that Samuel Maggard gave to Elizabeth Hoffman-Maggard (daughter of Nicholas Hoffmann, wife of Joseph Back, and the woman who is really buried here), when her apprenticeship was completed, just before she married Joseph.
I pray that someday, someone will do the right thing and honor this woman with a headstone that describes her. Her remains deserve the truth.
I have published two books on the Bach (Back) family, both of which include information on Elizabeth. Please visit this website: www.BachGenealogy.com, to get a copy.

Thank goodness someone finally stood up to those bullies at the Back-Bach Illogical Society!! Their genealogy is ridiculous and undocumented. They aren't even a non-profit organization, like they claim they are. They are all a bunch of lies. Thank YOU for...(Read more)|

Thank you for the information. I am a descendant of John Huffman and Maria (Folg) Huffman, and I couldn't help but feel a disservice had been done to both families with the incorrect genealogy. I've done my research, confirmed this information, updated my...(Read more)|
